Use what you have
An inexpensive notebook and a pencil are enough. Choose something you will actually carry rather than something so precious that every page feels like a commitment.
Record a detail, not an inventory
Write a colour, a sound or the shape of a cloud. If you do not know the name of a plant or bird, describe what you saw rather than guessing. A question can be a useful note in its own right.
Read it later
Occasionally look back through a few pages. Repeated details may reveal what draws your attention: edges, textures, birdsong or open space. The notebook becomes a record of your own way of looking, not a test of specialist knowledge.
